Grosvenor Square, one of London’s most historic urban green spaces, has undergone an ambitious transformation, and TMA is proud to be part of the design team driving this vision forward. The project presents a rare opportunity to rejuvenate the landscape, enhance biodiversity, and restore ecological balance at the heart of the city.

Overview

At the heart of the project is the protection, enhancement, and future resilience of its mature London plane trees, which are some of the most significant landscape features in the Square.

Challenge

Over the years, the square’s soil has become compacted from heavy foot traffic and routine maintenance, leading to reduced organic richness. Now, with a renewed focus on sustainability and nature-led design, the square is being reimagined to support healthier soils and thriving ecosystems. In collaboration with Ruskins Trees & Soil Biology Ltd and soil consultant Tim O’Hare, our team conducted in-depth assessments, including trial trenches to examine soil structure and tree root systems  to inform a tailored restoration strategy

The Approach

The revitalised Grosvenor Square will feature around 70,000 new plants, 44 carefully selected trees, wetland habitats, and 80,000 spring bulbs. These landscape elements have been thoughtfully integrated to encourage biodiversity and create a welcoming, resilient environment for both people and wildlife.

As part of this collaborative effort, TMA is helping shape a space that not only celebrates nature but also supports urban climate adaptation, cooling the city, improving water management, and enhancing overall well-being. This transformation reflects a broader commitment to enriching London’s parks and open spaces for generations to come.
