Tree Surveys and Inspections

What We Do

TMA provides professional tree inspections and bespoke tree surveys delivered by highly qualified, Lantra-accredited consultants. We specialise in assessing both individual trees and large tree populations, providing clear, informed advice to support effective tree management.

For individual trees, we undertake detailed Visual Tree Assessments, inspecting the tree from crown to ground to evaluate its health, condition and structural integrity.

Our assessments identify defects, structural weaknesses and potential risks, providing clear recommendations to support effective tree risk management and tree risk assessments.

We also carry out comprehensive tree condition and risk surveys for estates, landowners and local authorities managing significant tree stocks. Our work supports long-term management planning, risk management and the development of site-wide tree strategies and policies.

Following a pledge of funds to provide special care for a particularly notable tree, Emmanuel college approached TMA and asked for a proposal with regard to providing an enhanced level of care, and value, whilst ensuring that that the donor would have visibility of the benefit of the donation, despite no longer residing at the college. TMA proposed a suite of methods to assess the health and structure of the tree, provide an enhanced level of report and collaborated with Arb Innovators Ltd to simultaneously create a visualisation of the tree for the wider audience, including the donor.

TMA have provided arboricultural services to the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens for a number of years, including cyclical tree risk and condition surveys of the entire tree collection at the garden, specialist testing such as sonic tomography, resistance drilling and dynamic load stability testing. We have also provided advice in regard to proposed research projects using the tree collection within the gardens, and have delivered tree risk training to the apprentice gardeners under placement at the gardens as part of their level 3 horticultural studies. Recently, planned work to a tree with potential roost features required bat inspections, which TMA ecologists were able to facilitate.

Following a long working relationship with Bedford Estates in London, TMA were commissioned to carry out a tree risk and condition survey at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire. The gardens and Abbey have been closed since 2019 for refurbishment, as the reopening looms, TMA were tasked with assessing the trees and ensuring that any risk from the garden tree stock is managed, whilst having consideration of the historic nature of the site, and the values of the many mature and veteran trees present.

Following initial survey, TMA were asked to carry out an analysis of the ecosystem services provided by the tree stock, to demonstrate the environmental credentials of the garden, which may otherwise be forgotten and overshadowed by the visual impact of the tree and plant collection.

Are tree inspections important?

Did you know that you have a legal duty to manage the risk of your trees falling or shedding branches? Whether you are a government agency, a private landowner, school, or a homeowner, it's not just a choice but a legal 'duty' and to achieve your obligation, you must be reasonable, proportionate, and practical in reducing the risk to an Acceptable or Tolerable level.

What the law states

The Occupiers Liability Act 1954 and 1984 mandates managing tree risk and foreseeable damage. We'd emphasis the need for a "competent" person (a professional tree inspector, arborist or consultant) to conduct regular tree surveys. For commercial premises, there are also further obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Regular tree surveys are not just a precaution; they're a necessity. Let us guide you through the legal landscape, ensuring your trees remain a source of pride, not problems.
