About the Course

Veteran trees are the most important trees arboriculturists will ever deal with, due to their irreplaceable ecological and environmental benefits, wildlife habitat values, social, historical and cultural significance, and their aesthetic interest.

But what makes a tree a veteran? How do you identify them, and what are the special management considerations for veteran trees?

The short course provides information on identifying and recording veteran trees, describes the ageing process and how trees can live indefinitely, with information on tree survival strategies, how an understanding of morphophysiology and crown architecture helps ‘read’ the history of a tree, how older hollow trees can be stronger than younger solid trees and the international responsibility the UK has to protect the veteran tree population, as the largest proportion of veteran trees in Europe are in the UK.
