About the Course
This one-day training course provides built environment professionals with a clear, practical introduction to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and what it means for projects. Designed for landscape architects, architects, and developers, the course explores the key principles of BNG, the latest policy and regulatory requirements, and the tools used to measure success. Through a mix of presentations, real-world case studies, and interactive exercises, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence to embed BNG in their work.
The day covers how the BNG metric works, the different roles and responsibilities in delivering BNG, and the challenges and opportunities that can arise in practice. Using case studies of successful projects, attendees will identify practical design strategies and lessons learned. Break-out workshops and group tasks will encourage collaboration across disciplines, while live polls and quizzes will keep the learning engaging and relevant.
By the end of the course, participants will understand the essentials of BNG, be equipped with hints and tips for implementation, and leave with greater confidence to plan and deliver biodiversity-positive development.

Simon Thomas is Director of Ecology at TMA with over seventeen years’ experience as an ecological consultant. He leads TMA’s team in helping developers and designers maximise Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) scores, developing TMA’s BNG services since 2019 and before BNG became widely applied. Simon has trained diverse audiences, from Local Planning Authorities to planning consultants, and was a key speaker at the Trees, Planning and Construction Conference at Braxted Park in 2024.
Under his leadership, the TMA Ecology team has delivered around 50 BNG assessments, from single dwellings to major masterplans. This breadth of work gives Simon detailed insight into the BNG system, its opportunities, constraints, pitfalls, and practical tips for success.
